The First OIFF 2019 Diary: Jarmusch's Moral and Almodovar's Revelations No. 1

On July 12, the Odessa Film Festival officially opened, which will last until July 21. In the meantime, starting on the morning of June 13, the editorial staff went to evaluate the current program of complex, controversial and impressive films. We tell you about the most interesting premieres of the first two days.

I start my day with Jarmusch - at the Festival Palace, the screening of "The Dead don't Die", which was in the main Cannes competition, but, as they say, did not make the press. In fact, I would be surprised if at least some movie by a retired American indie had resonated with critics - Jim is quite stable in his measured author's view of life through the lens of cinema. When the director undertook to tell the story of noble vampires beyond time. Now I've turned to zombies, which I don't really like much myself, even within the genre. Perhaps that's why "The Dead Don't Die" is trying to get off the set trajectory of a conditional Romero and throw off certain genre obligations of zombie horror.

The action takes place in the small American town of Centreville, where a stolen chicken can be a difficult case for a policeman in a day. However, strange phenomena begin to occur here: the daylight shifts, clocks and phones do not work, and animals run away from the city. The press writes that the earth's axis has occurred and the end of the world is near. Meanwhile, in cemeteries, the dead rise from their graves and go to eat human flesh.

The dead don't die, but everyone ages, including Jarmusch. The director made a rather unflappable movie, a verdict on modern consumer society. The metaphor of the walking dead with an iPhone is just one of many not too subtle in the director. At the same time, we have a rather funny movie in front of us, which plays on absurdist notes and sketchiness. Bill Murray as the chief of police can no longer be intimidated by literally anything, Adam Driver is the only one who is more or less aware that he is in a Jarmusch movie, and Tilda Swinton speaks with a Scottish accent enough to sound like an alien. There are enough beautiful sketches here, which unfortunately do not add up to a full-fledged statement.

We also decided to shamelessly skip the opening of the film festival, so the current OIFF for us began not with endless speeches from officials of the Odessa Regional State Administration and champagne, but with Jarmusch. The best decision in the history of trips to Odessa. Jim's new job turned out to be devilishly moralizing (the leitmotif of the film is "look, some people look like zombies in their lifetime, horror"), but sweet.
